CHAPTER 15

Eva watched Daniel board his coach from the slight parting in the worn drapes in the parlor.

“He really does fancy you my dear.”

She glanced back and saw her father smiling at her, his eyes held that familiar sadness. And at that moment Eva couldn’t remember for the life of her the last time she had seen them happy.

“It really doesn’t matter either way,” Eva shrugged, “I’m calling off the engagement on the morrow.”

“Calling off the engagement,” Ellen’s shrill tones rang through the room, “Why would you do an asinine thing like that?

Eva had quite forgotten she was there, “I fail to see how this involves you in the slightest degree, Ellen.”

“If our family is about to come into a windfall, it involves me,” Ellen’s face was smug.

Eva nodded slowly, “Exactly the reason I will be calling off the engagement. I will make sure that neither you nor your husband gets within three feet of him.”

Ellen’s face fell, “You wouldn’t do that. You will be ruined. Everyone knows he kissed you in front of half the ton.”

Eva’s chin came up a fraction of an inch, “I would do anything for him.”

“Oh, dear Lord, you are in love with the man.” Ellen smirked, “Sister mine, you never fall in love, they always stray.”

Before Eva could respond their father stepped in, “Ellen that is enough of your vicious tongue, Eva has been nothing but kindness to you. She spends more time with your children than you do, and quite frankly, I think it’s time that you and your husband found your way back home again.”

Eva stood there staring at her father, hoping that she was not dreaming.

Ellen opened and closed her mouth and then opened it again.

But her father cut her off, “Ellen I won’t have you destroying her life, you may go along and check on your children. Eva, please stay a moment so I may speak with you.”

Eva’s father took her by the hand walked her over to the sofa.

“Please have a seat, my dear,” his kind smile settled on her face. “Eva, I owe you an apology. In truth, we all do. There have been some grave injustices going on in this household and I have allowed them to happen.”

Eva felt her throat close with emotion, “No Papa, don’t.”

His sad eyes glistened, “Eva, I am a selfish man and I have not done right by you. But that is going to change. I am sending you to stay with your great grandfather. He has asked for you and I feel that it would be best. Not because I do not love you, but because I do.”

“But Papa, what of the children?” a large tear slipped down Eva’s cheek.

“I would think that I can help with my own grandchildren,” he smiled at her tenderly. “And there is nothing wrong with being a doting aunt. You may visit and play with them and we can come and see you at the manor as well. But I have one more requirement. You cannot break your engagement to Moberly.
